Smart Port, Super Corridor, Super Boondoggle On September 30, 06 there will be a meeting for Operation U-Turn at the Clarion Hotel in Kansas City. This is an operation by the minutemen to educate the people as to what they perceive as the dangers from the proposed I-35 super corridor. If I understand them, they see it as a danger to sovereignty and border integrity. I do not agree. In general. Libertarians support the free flow of capital, people and ideas. Theoretically. this corridor would accomplish that end. The question is at what price? The proponents of the plan in Texas (the Trans Texas Corridor) advocate several positions that give us pause. FIRST They want state financing money. SECOND They want the power of eminent domain. That is they want the power to take thousands of square miles of land even though the owners do not wish to sell. THIRD They want the power to control what the land owners contiguous to the route can do with their lands. Essentially this means that they want the states to grant them their own little kingdoms, where they will provide rights of way for high tension power lines, rail roads, fiber optic cable routes, and a turnpike. I sort of like the deal, give me the power to pay for land with your money, or take it from the peasants that do not want to sell, and rent it to major industries at a profit. This is CORPORATE WELFARE, not free trade. We peasants oppose such Boondoggles. |
